I is for Irene the Terrible Other Woman - #A2Z2018

"Well, that year, Gabriel's father died. The family settled down and Gabriel continued to attend church. He took care of his wife and daughter lovingly. Three years passed. They were a happy couple when suddenly one of Gabriel's old girlfriends appeared at the gate of their house, with a young lad of twelve or thirteen by her side. I still remember the woman. She claimed that Gabriel was the boy's father. She was a scheming seductress and her intentions were definitely not good. But when confronted by her, Gabriel admitted he had been living with her some time back and the boy could be his child. They established the paternity with a DNA test. The boy Jack, was indeed his child.

Miss Hilda talked the matter over with Miss Irene. And that was when she committed the worst mistake of her life. You see sahib, Miss Hilda was a lady and had an overwhelming sense of fair play. When Irene claimed she had nowhere to go, Miss Hilda gave Irene the option of living under the same roof as Gabriel and her. Well, the women of today would look askance at an idea like that. Nowadays it would be considered extremely stupid to try something like that. Women are standing neck to neck with men now, Sahib. Today a girl faced with a situation like the one Miss Hilda found herself in would have simply walked out on Gabriel. But those were different times. The society gave women a rather subservient position those days. I dare say it is wrong.

And further Miss Hilda was genuinely in love with Gabriel and was loathe to relinquish him altogether. At first, Irene refused to ride along and claimed that she had sole authority over Gabriel, but later some idea took shape in her mind and she agreed. I was there when she came out of the room after her chat with Gabriel and Hilda. She was so smug and purring like a cat. Well, most people would say that her claims over Gabriel were just and she had a right over him. I dare say they would probably be right.

But you see, unlike Miss Hilda, that woman was not a good woman. Miss Hilda had very honorable intentions and meant to see to it that Irene and her child were given a roof to live under and be treated fairly. But Miss Irene, she had a scheme, a plan of action. She was very beautiful too. But beautiful like a cobra - very poisonous. I do not know why she had not staked her claim on Gabriel earlier. That is a mystery to me to this day.

Well, the three of them lived in that house like a triumvirate and three years passed. Slowly Gabriel began to get more and more enamored of Irene. Mind you Gabriel had the best of intentions when he agreed to that arrangement. But Irene somehow came all over him. And little by little he began neglecting Hilda and Karen.

He began paying more attention to Irene. Soon Irene became the queen of the house. Hilda and Karen were severely discriminated against. They were given the leftovers of the food. Their clothes were old. Father Kirsten once called Gabriel and admonished him. I daresay Gabriel understood and did make efforts to correct things.

But Gabriel was weak. Nothing wrong with Gabriel actually, sahib. He was just weak-willed. As far as poor little Karen was concerned, she was too young to understand anything. She was bewildered why Jack was getting so much to eat and so much to wear while she was given so little. She was 8 or 9 years old at that time. And as far as the other child Jack was concerned, he was the apple of his mother's eye and the prince of the house," finished the fiddler.
