R is for the Rock that came tumbling down - #A2Z2018

Mat was very tired and drove slowly but steadily along the highway. After four hours he turned left into the dirt path that led to the mountain road. He was soon driving along the mountain road that led to his villa. He was driving very very slowly. His eyelids were drooping and he was feeling heavy headed without sleep.

The sky was slightly cloudy today. Maybe it was going to rain. He was just negotiating the steep Bellarton curve when some slight disturbance in the slope ahead made him press his foot sharply on the break. His car came to a halt. Just a few feet ahead of him a huge rock went tumbling past the road and fell down into the steep ravine to his right.

Mat immediately jumped out of his car and looked up the steep slope. He could just make out the figure of a man in a hood running away as quickly as possible. Mat realized there was no way he could give chase. Mat also realized he had been lucky to have been driving so slowly. Had he been driving at his usual speed the boulder would have smashed right into his car and would have sent it crashing down into the ravine.

He got back into his car and drove to his villa. He parked it in the garage and made his way to the front door and let himself in. He phoned up Shivani and her voice immediately said, "Hello Dada, Karen is recovering quickly. Her temperature is now at ninety-six. That is just two degrees below the normal body temperature. She still has to be fed through drips but now the doctors have begun giving her medicines. They feel it is safe. Where are you, Dada?"

"I am at my villa Shivani. I am waiting for an email. We will know everything soon. I will meet you as soon as I can. You will have to hold the fort for another day. What is Vikram doing?" asked Mat. "Well he is moving heaven and earth to solve that old Gabriel shootout case," said Shivani, "Are you coming to visit Karen?"

"Callous as it may sound I have to say I will come as soon as I can. I am deep on the track of something rather fiendish and cannot afford to take chances," said Mat. He bid her goodbye and hung up. He went and opened the door of his refrigerator and poured himself a drink. Mat drank very rarely but he was getting to the final stage of his quest and he needed all his energy with him."

He poured himself just half a glass of whiskey diluted it with plenty of water and sipped it. He checked his inbox every half an hour for an email from Pramod. Mat waited patiently.

  1. So, so curious to know what Promod will reveal. Mat's character is well written. Love the pace of the story ... not too many descriptions, and enough action to keep me clicking next. Enjoyed the read so far :)

Would love it if you could check out my #AtoZchallenge post on R.

  2. Hi Jai! I think the coming week will hold a lot of action and twists. This week posts have beein the limbo :)

  3. That rock being dislodged is a nice touch indeed. Waiting to see what's next.

  4. Something rather fiendish indeed, building up for a great last week of the story!

  5. The progression of the novella is just apt Jai. Enjoy every single read.

  6. I have been at edge of my seat everytime Mat travels, and after his dream, I was kind of thinking he reaches safely with less sleeps and continuous nightmares one after the other. I can only wonder what the poor man must be going through. But his determination is so well brought out and waiting for more pieces to fit in. Very well done.

  7. We are following Mat eagerly ... what will be the next revelation ?!! Enjoying the fast pace of ur narrative !

  8. I'm waiting as well to know what happens next.

  9. Hi Jai, couldn't read post in order as my son was unwell last week. Now will cover till your T post of today. Very keep to know what comes up in next posts.
