Y is for Yes, My Dear, The Nightmare Is Over - #A2Z2018

Vikram moved into the room. He looked at the fiddler's body slumped forward in his chair. Then he turned to Mat and said, "That was rather stupid of you, you know. Attempting to tackle him yourself."

"Well," Mat defended himself, "I knew that boy was in danger. You would have probably barged in with your sirens screaming."

"That is the trouble with you men in the armed forces. You take us policemen for fools. I would have definitely been wiser than that. Well anyway, we have taken that boy to the hospital in an ambulance. His temperature is dropping rapidly. Same as your granddaughter. We don't know who he is," said Vikram.

"His name is Terrence. He is a street child. At least that is what the fiddler told me," replied Mat.

"How did you land up here?" Mat asked Vikram.

"Well, Pramod suddenly decided it would be better to phone up the police," said Vikram, "He told us all that he had found out and also sent us the same details he had sent you. We immediately recognized this fellow from the photographs Pramod sent and came here double quick."

Mat stood up and stepped out of the shack. Immediately Shivani rushed into his arms sobbing. She said, "I was so worried about you Dada."

She looked towards the shack and asked, "Is it, is it all over?"

Mat said in a quiet voice, "Yes, my dear, the nightmare is over."

Soon Mat was at the hospital with Shivani. It was 12.30 AM. Karen had been moved out of the ICU. She was lying on the bed in the pediatric ward. She was looking dazed as she glanced up at Mat. He bent down and kissed her on the cheeks and forehead and said, "My darling." The child smiled weakly and whispered, "thatha, thatha"

Suddenly the strain of having functioned under severe nervous strain for days overcame Mat. Waves of dizziness swept over him. He looked at Shivani and said, "I have to let go Shivani. Wait for me here. I will be back soon." He rushed out of the ward and into the nearest cloakroom and bolted the door. Then he let go of himself completely. He laughed and laughed and laughed for a full five minutes. His lungs ached with the strain. Slowly his mind came back to a normal state.

Shivani was knocking on the door frantically. Mat finally opened the door and let himself out. Shivani was seriously worried and insisted that he see a doctor immediately. Mat reluctantly acquiesced. The doctor at the casualty examined him. He smiled and said, "No need to worry, just severe shock. Have a good meal and sleep for a day and you will be fine. But you need to rest immediately. Your body simply cannot take any more strain."
